Six month volunteer opportunity, Camp Altiplano (Spain)

About the opportunity

People up to the age of 30 are invited to join our 6-month EU Solidarity Corps volunteer project for EU residents starting 1 April 2024. You’ll be living and working together in rural Murcia in the Southeast of Spain at Camp Altiplano, located on La Junquera organic farm which is being brought back to life and transformed into a regenerative hotspot in the area. Experience living on a farm that is focused on the ecological restoration of degraded lands, as you give your time to help La Junquera become an inspiration to other farms of the region. You’ll be contributing to revitalising the local town and community, as economic activity follows the restoration of the degraded land. Experience the different projects running on the farm – such as regenerative farming and “La del Terreno”, traditional wine making – and get to know the people at Regeneration Academy who are developing these projects!

Accommodation, transport and stipend

The main accommodation is a straw bale house: one large bedroom that can sleep up to 8 people. The closest town is Caravaca, which has all the necessary services (banks, pharmacy, hospital, supermarkets, restaurants, cafeterias, etc). A bus service connects Caravaca with Murcia and Andalusia. Nearby is the Andalusian town of Topares. Travel reimbursement, tutoring, pocket money (Eur150 per month), organic food produced on the farm, a food subsidy and local transportation are all provided by the farm.

What you’ll be doing

Volunteers will be trained in new approaches and techniques for restoring agricultural land and natural ecosystems that will improve the livelihoods of farmers, landowners, and local communities. You’ll learn how to increase organic matter, carbon content and water retention capacity of the soil to stimulate large scale carbon sequestration; reforestation of natural areas and hedges of fields with native trees and bushes; and maintenance of artificial ponds to harvest rainwater, replenish aquifers and support local wildlife.

Who we’re looking for

We’re keen to receive applications for a January or June intake, from physically fit individuals under the age of 30 who enjoy outdoor (and all-weather), manual work, don’t mind getting their hands dirty, and are keen to work in an unconventional setting. You also need to be adaptable, flexible and capable of working in a team. The start date is 1 April 2024.
