Overview & Impact

Perma Atlas Morocco is located in the highest part of the Atlas mountain range in central Morocco.  In this region known as the High Atlas, eroded mountains – barren and devoid of vegetation – struggle to capture and retain water, leading to the loss of fertile topsoil. The Perma Atlas team is dedicated to the revitalization of the region and is using using permaculture techniques rooted in ancient Berber traditions to restore the landscape. By constructing dams (gabions) in water channels (chabas) and carving small channels (swales) along the slopes, they are arresting and reverse erosion. These permaculture strategies have multiple effects: the dams slow water flow, retain soil, and promote the growth of new vegetation.

Their mission extends beyond environmental restoration, with a commitment to nurturing resilient communities too. Embedding sustainability within these communities involves not only rehabilitating the natural habitat but also fostering self-sufficiency and resilience. This empowers community members to take responsibility for their living environment and future.

Perma Atlas Morocco prioritizes food security in collaboration with the local population. Climate change and the shift towards modern agricultural techniques have diminished local food cultivation, resulting in a dependence on external food sources. This dependence often leads to scarcity and elevated prices. By advocating for self-sufficiency, Perma Atlas Morocco is aiding the residents of Anguelz in reclaiming control over their food supply and future.

Impact story

By employing permaculture techniques rooted in ancient Berber traditions Perma Atlas Morocco has been working to revitalise eroded mountains in the High Atlas. As the environment has been restored, resilient, self-sufficient communities have been empowered and the trained, local population is ready to share their expertise with other surrounding villages as they continue to re green the valley.

Achievements & Partners

Over the past few years Perma Atlas Morocco has implemented gabions and key line techniques, to regulate flood control, enhance soil fertility, rejuvenate herbs and plants in higher altitude areas, and increase the presence of small wildlife. The village is now better protected from the impacts of climate change, inspiring renewed confidence and belief among the local population in the prospects of restoration and a habitable environment.

Perma Atlas Morocco partners with local Anguelz organisation FAAP (Future Association pour le développement agricol et la protection de l’environnement).
