Environmental Science volunteer, Reedsdale Regeneration (South Africa)

About Reedsdale Regeneration

Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, we are regenerating spekboom thicket, as well as dry grassland, and aiming to capture carbon.

We are also implementing the use of livestock for hoof action, and pigs for rooting to work on erosion and water infiltration. We are starting with 3850 hectares of personal property with the scope to add tens of thousands of hectares in the area which is rich in rare biodiversity.

We are in the final stages of planning with an international donor and implementer to start with 100 hectares of Research & Development. We have 22,000 rooted cuttings in a nursery to be planted out in September, with 10,000 more cuttings to be rooted in the next 3 months.

What the position entails

We are looking for a long-term volunteer who is prepared to work a full work week, and stay for at least one month. The role will involve collecting and reporting the data to Reedsdale Regeneration and to Ecosystem Restoration Communities (ERC) is required and the volunteer will use the ERC Soil Framework for monitoring and evaluations. Liaising with the ERC communications team is also requested.

What skills are required?

An educational background in environmental sciences, applied sciences, geography, or experience in ecosystem restoration. Also a knowledge of nurseries, water infiltration, erosion control, GIS mapping, biodiversity capturing, bird studying, endangered wildlife studies, and endangered birds and plants studies. Some level of experience and skill in data sampling, analysis and carbon testing is also required.

Where will I stay?

A cottage is available with running water, ablutions, electricity, and a functional kitchen. There is satellite internet, a linen & washing service, a garden and a swimming pool. The cost to stay will be waivered in exchange for research and work on the ground. If you are a university student nearby, this can be organised differently depending on your university allowances etc. Meals to be discussed, homemade bread and organic meat available.

What can I expect in my free time?

Relax at the swimming pool, or enjoy a hike, walk, mountain bike ride, and many photographic opportunities of the dramatic landscape.
