Association for Human Integrated Massive Social Action (AHIMSA) is an ecological restoration centre located on a 5-acre leased site in Purathakudy Village, Vaiyampatty Block, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu, India. The land lies within a semi-arid landscape, characterised by undulating terrain, red soil, and erratic monsoon rainfall. Historically, the area supported mixed farming systems and tree cover. However, prolonged low rainfall, declining groundwater levels, and unresolved legal issues led to neglect, resulting in degraded soil health, reduced biodiversity, and loss of productive vegetation. AHIMSA took over the land to restore its ecological and productive potential through nature-based and community-driven restoration practices. The core objective of the ERC is to regenerate soil, conserve water, revive native biodiversity, and demonstrate sustainable farming models suitable for dryland regions. Restoration activities include the construction of water harvesting structures such as bunds and farm ponds, preparation and application of organic inputs to rebuild soil fertility, and the establishment of a traditional seed bank to conserve indigenous, climate-resilient crop varieties. The ecological restoration centre operates within a rural, agrarian socio-economic context, where smallholder farmers face climate uncertainty, water scarcity, and rising input costs. AHIMSA actively involves the local community in farm activities, training, and demonstrations. Community members work alongside AHIMSA and are encouraged to replicate successful practices on their own land, strengthening local resilience.
Through its ecological restoration and farmer-led initiatives, AHIMSA has regenerated more than 100 acres of degraded farmland, restoring soil health and productivity. The organisation conserves rich agrobiodiversity, including over 20 traditional paddy varieties, 15 millet varieties, and 30 varieties of vegetables and tubers, strengthening local food security and climate resilience. AHIMSA trains farmers to identify pests and beneficial predators, reducing chemical dependence, and supports them in preparing organic inputs on their own farms. To address water scarcity and landscape restoration, AHIMSA has enabled the digging of 30 farm ponds and facilitated the planting of over 130,000 tree seedlings, revitalising ecosystems and rural livelihoods.
