About Rancho Cacachilas
Rancho Cacachilas is a solar-powered, self-sustaining adventure guest ranch located near La Paz in Southern Baja, Mexico, at the foot of the Sierra Cacachilas mountain range. Restoration of this land – degraded by cattle and goat ranching in the past – is critical to ensure groundwater recharge and improved surface water flows. Rancho Cacachilas is looking to employ someone to implement effective erosion control infrastructure on site to support their land restoration and water management plan.
What the position entails
Design of erosion control works and supervision of their construction.
Skills required
- Expertise in gabion construction
- The candidate should ideally be fluent in Spanish, and be able to communicate in English
Responsibilities and specific functions
- Digital evaluation of tentative construction sites (using Google Earth, GIS, satellite imagery, precipitation records, topographic information, etc.)
- Final site selection, marking and design of works
- Planning (work schedule and budget revision with team)
- Coordination of materials’ acquisition (those acquired by Rancho Cacachilas)
- Monitoring of construction of works
- Survey of built works (geo-positioning with GPS, dimensioning, registry of materials and manhours, filling of logs, upload of information to Google Earth and in the future GIS)
- Adjustment of logs according to field needs
- Continuous improvement of construction processes to obtain efficiencies (materials, tools, machinery, etc.)
- Continuous improvement of construction execution logistics (movement and location of personnel, animals, machinery, and vehicles)
- Post-rain monitoring of field works
- Evaluation of repair works needed and planning and monitoring of their execution
- Structural simulation of works (desirable)
- Hydraulic simulation of works (desirable)
- Creation and updating of construction manuals
- Training of workers on issues related to erosion control works

Where will I stay?
You will need to secure accommodation in La Paz, and travel back and forth to the ranch. Vehicles are available for this use.
